These tongue twisters with E use not only words that start with the letter e, but also words with some of the different e sounds. An interesting activity for English learners is to see if they can identify the long e and short e sounds in these silly sentences. You can print out the free PDF above and ask your students to circle words with a specific e sound. Alternatively, they can circle different letter e sounds with different colored pens or pencils.
The short e sound occurs in words such as red, bed, peg, test, gem, and ea digraphs like head. The long e sound can be heard in words such as prefix, extreme, bee, as well as words ending in y or ey, such as many pony, barley, and hockey.
