Short I words

On this page, you will find plenty of free short I words resources. There are word lists, both for CVC words and longer words, picture flashcards that can be used for learning games, and some easy practice sentences.

The short I sound most often appears in short words, that is words that consist of only 3 to 5 letters. This makes them great for children and lower-level ESL students. They’re helpful in not only teaching pronunciation but also spelling and general vocabulary acquisition.

The sound can be shown as either /ɪ/ or as an I with a short vowel mark above it – ĭ. Let’s compare some short I and long I words to notice their difference. Read them aloud and listen to your pronunciation.

  1. Pill and Pile
  2. Dim and Dime
  3. Win and Wine
  4. Kit and Kite
  5. Dill and Dial

You will have noticed that the short I is…short, and of course, the long I is much more drawn out. For more comparisons check out the long I words with pictures page that has more free related materials.
