SK blends
Here are some free resources for teaching the consonant blend of SK. There are word lists, beautiful picture flashcards, and practice sentences that you can use to teach early primary school students and beginner ESL learners.
The materials on this page feature SK blends in the initial, medial, and final positions. This means that the SK sound is at the start, middle, and end of the words.
Teaching these words will assist learners with not only reading and spelling but also help build their overall vocabulary. The words will also benefit any students that have pronunciation issues with the target sound.

SK blends pictures
Next, we have some photograph and word flashcards that use the/sk/ sound. These are great for playing learning games and keeping learners engaged with their interesting visuals.
The words on these flashcards are –
Initial position 1 – scarf, scone, scoop, scooter, scorpion, screw, skateboard, and skeleton.
Initial position 2 – sketch, ski, skid, skin, skip, skirt, skunk, and sky.
Medial position – Alaska, basket, biscuit, disco, mosquito, rescue, telescope, and whiskers.
Final position – ask, desk, disk, husk, kiosk, mask, tusk, and whisk.
Some simple ideas for using these pictures include –
- Use randomly chosen pictures to make silly sentences. This can be a lot of fun, the sillier the better.
- Arrange the cards in alphabetical order or into color groups.
- Print 2 sets of cards to play memory games or even card games like “Snap” and “Go Fish”.
- Cut the words from the cards and ask students to match them with their corresponding pictures.
- Use the pictures to make SK word posters and anchor charts that you can hang in the classroom or at home.
