Here we have a nice collection of English tongue twisters with I. These silly but challenging sentences use both the long and short I vowel sounds.

If you aren’t familiar with these terms, it is all very simple. Short I words have a quick short I sound, and long I words have a longer drawn-out sound. Look at these examples and say them aloud to notice the difference –

Short I – big, pin, pit, zip, kid, picture, chicken, and dinner.

Long I – wine, tiger, fire, dry, tie, flashlight, and drive.

Further activity

If you are in an English language classroom a good follow-up activity is to ask learners to identify the long and short I sounds in the I tongue twisters. Ask students to circle the two sounds with different colored pens on the printable PDF above.

Another thing you can do is ask the class to brainstorm more words for both sounds. This activity can also be made into a quick team game with points awarded for each new word and an eventually winner.
