Coffee Idioms and expressions
People around the world love and, in many cases, are addicted to this delicious and stimulating drink that has a long history from ancient tribes to our local coffee houses that seem to appear on nearly every street corner in big cities and small towns. The discovery and popularity of coffee have long ties with history and global agriculture. And of course, the English language has also taken on many different coffee idioms and expressions that reflect this.
There is an old legend about a goat herder in Ethiopia that discovered coffee. After seeing his flock acting strangely and highly energetic, he found they had been eating berries and after he sampled them himself, he experienced a rush of energy.
Over the centuries many countries have perfected the growth, preparation and roasting of these beans along with a dazzling array of ways to extract the delicious liquid from the grinds. From French Presses, to Italian Espresso Machines where they have made famous the frothed milk on top to make Cappuccinos.
My favorite is the Vietnamese style of slow drip into a glass of ice with delicious condensed milk to sweeten it. With our little intro into coffee, let’s get into some fun idioms about coffee, where we will go over their meanings as well as examples used in sentences.
