long i words with pictures
Here we have another post about vowel sounds. This time we are looking at the long I sound. There are the long I words with pictures flashcards, some teaching ideas, an extensive long I word list, and some fun practice sentences that use long I words.
Long I words are simply words that are pronounced with the sound stretched out. To make this clear, let us compare a long I and a short I word. For example pine and pin. You can notice that when you say the word pin the I sound is very short whereas with pine the I sound drags out much longer.
There are 6 different ways in which long I words can be spelled. With just an I, or with I_E (i consonant e), using IGH, IG, or IE, and finally with a Y. Here are some quick examples –
- I – pilot, library, I’ll, and cacti.
- I_E – ice, bite, lime, and vine.
- IGH – night, high, fight, and mighty.
- IG – sign, assignment, design, and malign.
- IE – pie, tie, fried, and die.
- Y – sly, imply, type, and cycle.

These free printable cards are great for both teaching English pronunciation and at the same time helping learners expand their vocabularies. Just print and cut out the cards and they can be used in all manner of educational activities. Here are a few ideas –
- Pelmanism/matching. This can be done by either printing 2 sets of cards t match or by cutting the words off the bottom of the cards to match with the pictures.
- Arranging. Ask your students to arrange the cards alphabetically, by long I sound spelling type, as verbs nouns, or adjectives, by the number of syllables, or any other way you like.
- Making sentences. Give students several cards and ask them to create a sentence using the words.
- Comparisons. Ask your students to think of short I sound words that are similar to the cards. For example, for the word “type” they could say “tip” and for “sky” they could say “ski”.
- For some younger learners, you can just give them a long I word list and ask them to draw the words.
- If you cut the words off the bottom of the cards you can give students a list of the words that are jumbled up to make a puzzle game. For lime give them lmei, for knight give them ntihgk, and so on.
- Rhyming. Get your students to find and group together all the words that rhyme.
