Letter X Words for Kids

The letter X can be challenging for both children and ESL learners alike. It is pronounced in several different ways, and there are not a lot of easy words that contain it in the English language. Here are some X words for kids with pictures to help learners get started.

On this page, you will find flashcards, word lists, and example sentences you can use in the classroom. These X words use the sounds of /ks/, /gz/, and /z/. You will find words that start with X, end with X, and have X in the middle.

You can use these picture cards for activities such as:

Sorting –  This can be done in ways such as alphabetical order, adjectives, verbs, and nouns, color groups, pictures students like and dislike, or any other way that is interesting.

Sentence creation –  Give learners one or more cards and ask them to create a sentence using the words.

Tongue twisters – Mix the cards up and then give students 3 or more cards to make their own silly sentences and tongue twisters.

Matching – Buy cutting the words from the bottom of the pictures you can create a fun picture and word matching activity to help reinforce the vocabulary.

Most of the vocabulary in the above word list is commonly known. However, there are a few words that some people may not be familiar with. These include – 

Flax – This is a plant that is used by people for its fibre, oil, and seeds. It is used to make textiles and food products.

Xerus – This is a kind of squirrel that lives in Africa. They live on the ground in burrows and mostly eat plants and insects.

Xenops – This is a kind of rainforest and jungle bird found in South and Central America. They are very small and behave similarly to woodpeckers.
