Ending Blends Words: List and Pictures

Ending Blends Words

Ending blends are two or more consonants at the end of a word, with each consonant making its own sound. This is different from a consonant digraph, where two letters work together to represent one sound. For example, -nd in hand is an ending blend because you can hear both /n/ and /d/, while -sh in fish is a digraph because the letters represent one sound.

This page features ending blends words lists, picture flashcards, and ideas to help children recognize common word patterns and practise reading and spelling. These resources are ideal for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers supporting children as they develop their phonics and early reading skills.

You can explore the ending blends below to find ending blend words for each consonant pattern, then use the picture flashcards for engaging phonics practice at home or in the classroom.

Ending Blend Words With Pictures

Next, we have some beautiful photograph flashcards of ending blends that can be used in fun learning activities. The cards use the 16 most common final consonant blends, with 4 examples of each, to give us 64 flashcards.

These ending blend picture cards help children connect words with pictures while learning to recognize final consonant blends. Each card features a familiar word and picture, making them useful for phonics lessons, vocabulary practice, and early reading activities.

How to use the picture cards:

Identify the pictures: Ask children to name each object and say the word aloud.

Listen for ending blends: Help children identify the final consonant sounds in each word.

Practise reading: Encourage children to sound out the words and read them independently.

Play matching games: Print the cards and use them for word and picture matching activities.

These free printable picture cards are designed to be suitable for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers to use during classroom lessons or phonics practice at home.

Ending Blend Activities

Sort the ending blends

Children can sort word cards into groups such as -nd, -mp, -st, and -ft, identifying the final sounds in each word.

Complete the words

Give children incomplete words such as ha__, la__, and ne__ and ask them to fill in the missing consonants.

Odd one out

Show three words, such as hand, sand, and lamp. Children identify the word with a different ending blend.

Write a sentence

Children are to choose three words from the list and use each in a simple sentence.

Build a word

Give children some letter tiles and ask them to build words such as hand, milk, jump, and desk. They are then to identify the final consonants.

Listen and identify

The teacher/instructor is to say a word aloud and ask children to identify its ending blend without seeing the spelling. The flashcards can also be used for this.

Pick a card and say the word

In this simple activity, children pick a picture card, name the object, repeat the word slowly, and identify the consonants they hear at the end.

Draw and label

For an engaging and creative exercise, children can draw an object containing an ending blend, write its name underneath, and circle the final consonants.
