Hard G words
Here are some free resources for teaching and learning about hard G words in the English language. They arere are hard G sound words, lists, and pictures that you can use in all sorts of ways to teach the sound /g/. These materials not only serve to teach pronunciation but also vocabulary in general.
The hard G sound is technically called a voiced velar plosive or voiced velar stop. It is a voiced sound, which means your throat should vibrate as you pronounce it. As you say this hard G, your tongue should be at the bottom of your mouth, below your bottom teeth.
If you are either learning or teaching this sound, it is a good idea to use soft G words (/dʒ/) in comparison to help show the differences between these two main G sounds.
Okay, let’s dive in and see what we have here. There are Lists and picture flashcards for hard G words in the initial, medial, and final positions. Note that the free printable PDF is not as comprehensive as the lists below….there are only so many words that could practically fit on one page.
The picture flashcards pages have been designed with the simplest vocabulary possible, thus making them accessible for children and ESL learners. Hopefully, you find them useful! You can use them to play your favorite flashcard games and even for other learning activities. The visuals will engage learners much more so than just written words.
