Same different worksheets

Here is a cute collection os same different worksheets for preschoolers and other younger learners. They help children understand the concept of things being alike or not by using pictures. By comparing things, kids gain visual differentiation skills and learn how to analyse. These abilities are extremely important for us to understand our world and navigate our way through it.

These free PDF pages can be used in a few different ways, depending on what is most suitable for your students, and can even be adapted to involve more complex questioning and used for older kids.

The worksheets provided here feature simple outline pictures of fruits, vegetables, food, animals, and other simple things that many kids are already aware of.

Same or different worksheets (different)

The first 8 worksheets, above and below, ask learners to find the object that is different out of a small group of pictures. Once they have identified the dissimilar picture, they can circle it or put a cross on it.

A more engaging way of showing they have found the anomaly in the groups is to get children to color that picture in. This also adds some extra fine motor skills to the activities. You can also ask students to cross out or color in all the pictures that are the same.

Once a learner has completed a worksheet, you can use it to ask follow-up questions. The questions will, of course, depend on the speaking ability of the child, so you will have to adapt to each class or student appropriately.

Think of easy questions about things such as colors and size to start with. Which pictures do they like and dislike? Which objects are their favorites? And if possible, questions that get them to further compare the images that they see in front of them.

For young ESL learners, basic questions like “What is it?”, “What color is it?” and “Do you like it?” are a good place to start.
