Here are some simple prepositions of place worksheets that involve vocabulary matching. Students simply need to write the correct prepositions underneath each picture. To take this activity further and involve more English speaking practice get the students to answer verbally in sentences.
The answers from left to right in the handout above should be –
The cat is on the ball of wool. The mouse is in front of the piece of cheese. The cat is between the balls of wool. The cat is next to the ball of wool.
The mouse is on the piece of cheese. The cat is under the ball. The mouse is in the cheese. The cat is above the ball.
The mouse is between the cheese. The mouse is under the cheese. The mouse is behind the cheese. The cat is in front of the ball.
Difficult prepositions of place pictures worksheet
This handout is a bit more challenging and has 15 prepositions of place and movement. If you plan to get the students to answer in sentence form you may want to provide the needed vocabulary beforehand – rock, cave, pole, hoop, ice, and leaf.
The answers are –
The frog is in the water. The penguin is going out of the cave. The frog is next to the rock. The dolphin is going around the pole.
The penguin is going into the cave. The crocodile is in front of the rock. The dolphin is jumping through the hoop. The penguin is walking past the ice.
The dolphin is behind the rock. The frog is on the rock. The dolphin is between the rock and the ball. The frog is under the leaf/plant.
The penguin is jumping over the ice. The crocodile is climbing up the rock. The crocodile is behind the rock. The Penguin is sliding down the ice.
Easy prepositions of place ESL
An easy prepositions of place ESL worksheet with only 9 pictures and 8 words to match.
The correct answers here are –
The bee is next to the hive. The cat is under the box. The dog is in the doghouse.
The dog is on the chair. The flower is between the bees. The cat is behind the box.
The cat is over/jumping over the box. The dog is under the ball. The bee is in front of the hive.
For this activity, students can draw lines between the object and the correct words. Once this is completed they can also write the words under the pictures if you think it will help them to learn the words.
This exercise has 16 different prepositions of place and is a little challenging.
