Printable ST Blend Words with Pictures and List

ST Blend Words

When we combine the sounds of /s/ and/t/ we get what is known as a consonant blend or consonant cluster. The ST blend in particular can be a difficult one for children and some ESL learners to master. Here are some free resources that you can use to help learners who are having any issues in this area improve their articulation and, additionally, to build vocabulary.

The page has been organised into sections with ST blends in the initial, medial, and final positions. There are over 150 words and 49 picture cards to print. Each section includes a word list and 16 flashcards with photographs. There is also a free printable ST Blend words list further down the page.

It should be noted that words with a silent letter do not count as blends. For example, the words catle and listen have a silent T, they are therefore not considered ST blends. For a letter combination to be a blend, you must hear both letters when pronouncing a word.

Ideas for using the ST blends resources

There is quite a lot you can do with the picture flashcards above. Here are some ideas that you may want to try –

Sorting. By providing learners with a variety of ST blend pictures, you can ask them to sort them in all kinds of ways. Alphabetical order, by blend position, word letter count, likes and dislikes, and living or not are some great ways to do this.

Sentence Prompts. Give students one or more of the picture cards for them to create sentences using the words.

Identifying Sounds and Spelling. You can use these cards in tandem with other phonics cards on this site for activities in which learners recognise and differentiate blends. For example, combine these with the initial R words pictures and get learners to identify and group them. It is all very simple, yet helpful reading practice.

Making Tongue Twisters. By combining several cards or words, you can get learners to create their own tongue twisters. These are great because they don’t always have to make a lot of sense and can be a barrel of laughs.
