60 SW Blend Words – List and pictures

SW Blend Words

Explore these free SW blend words resources for phonics practice at home or in the classroom. This collection includes a list of SW words, 24 picture flashcards, a coloring page, and practice sentences to help learners recognize, read, and use words that begin with SW.

The SW consonant blend combines the /s/ and /w/ sounds, pronounced in sequence without a vowel between them. To make the /s/ sound, keep the teeth close together and direct a steady stream of air forward. For the /w/ sound, round the lips gently. Encourage learners to connect the two sounds smoothly in SW blend words such as swim, sweet, swing, and sweep.

A great way to start out with these words is to start by modelling the blend clearly and encouraging learners to listen and repeat. Use the picture flashcards to practise identifying SW blend words, then move on to reading the word list and completing some practice sentences. The coloring page provides another fun way to reinforce vocabulary.

SW Blend Words List

Here is a simple word list that has a few more entries than the printable PDF at the top of the page.

Note: Not all words containing the letters sw have an SW consonant blend. In words such as sword, there is a silent W, so the /sw/ sound is not produced. Compound words such as crossword, crosswalk, and beeswax are also excluded from this list because the letters do not form an SW blend within the same word part.

There are many fun learning activities that these picture cards can be used for, such as –

Sorting

Learners can arrange the cards in alphabetical order. Children can also group the cards by category, such as animals, actions, objects, or food, depending on the words included. Have them say each word as they place it in a group.

Listen and Find

Say an SW word and ask students to find the matching picture. Once they are familiar with the cards, describe a picture without naming it and see if they can identify it from your description. In pairs or groups, students can also describe the words to each other.

What’s Missing?

For this visual memory and recall exercise, lay out several flashcards and give learners time to study them. Ask them to close their eyes, remove one card, and then guess which picture is missing.
