200 WH questions for kids (5 free PDFs)

Here is a large collection of WH questions for kids and ESL beginners. These simple questions make it easy for learners to give responses beyond yes/no and start having basic conversations. The open-ended questions start with the words of –

There are five sets of 40 questions here, each of which also comes as a free printable PDF for you to download. Each page has a variety of WH questions, which helps keep the discussion interesting. If you want to focus on just one question word, you will see it clustered together on each page for such a scenario. You can print out all the pages and just use the WH questions that you need, or simply copy and paste the text below.

Each of the printables also has a picture to describe. You can ask students to create WH questions from the picture, or as a teacher, ask them further ones.

When possible, try to get learners to give answers in sentences, not just 1 or 2 words. For example, if the question is “What do rabbits like to eat?”, instead of just answering something like “Carrots”, encourage students to say “Rabbits like to eat carrots”. Again, if the learner is able, try to ask follow-up WH questions, such as “What other animals like to eat carrots?” and “Where do rabbits live?”.
