Long OO words
Here are some free printable resources for long OO words in the English language for teaching both kids and ESL learners. You can use these materials in many different ways to help make your lessons more interesting.
To start, let’s have a quick look at both the long and short OO sounds so that you can notice the difference in their pronunciation. Of course, the long OO sound is much more drawn out and the short OO sound is……shorter!
Try saying these words to see the difference –
Long OO – room, balloon, moon, and spoon.
Short OO – cook, hook, wool, and hoof
It should be noted that on this page only long OO words with the phonetic symbol of /uː/ have been used. The words here are also all spelled with OO. The /uː/ sound can also be made with OU spelling but this is not what we are looking at.
Furthermore, there are words with long OO that don’t have a /uː/ sound. Examples of these include the words floor, door, boor, and poor. These use the /ɔ/ sound for most native English speakers and again have not been included here.
