Anagrams puzzles
Free printable anagrams puzzle worksheets. Here we have anagrams of sports, food, jobs and occupations, animals, and countries. These activities are a fun way to reinforce vocabulary and can be used as in-class activities or homework assignments.
Most of these puzzles are quite challenging and are suitable for intermediate level learners and above. Check out the solutions at the bottom of to page to make sure your students are familiar with all the words before you start.
If your class has trouble with one or more of the anagrams, give them some clues. You can say how many words the answer is, what the first letter is, or give a description of the answer.
For lower-level classes, these sheets work well as group or whole class activities. You can also make a game writing the numbers on the board and letting students come and write the solutions when they find them. Award points to the team or student when they do so.
The first worksheet above of fresh food anagrams contains names of fruit and vegetables.
What is an anagram?
An anagram is a word, phrase or sentence that is formed by using all the letters of a different one. For example, “god” is an anagram of “dog”, or He likes cats” can be rearranged into “castle sheik”.
Some of the anagrams here are quite silly but that is all part of the fun!
Animal anagrams puzzle with pictures

Further activity
Once your class has finished one of the worksheets, get them to create their own anagrams. This is a great opportunity to go back over textbooks and revise previously learnt vocabulary.
A good way to do this is to set your class up in pairs or small teams to create anagrams. Once they are ready, let them challenge the rest of the class with their puzzle creations.
