Free printable rebus puzzles
What is a rebus puzzle? It is a visual blend of things, such as pictures, letters, icons, and numbers, that combine together to represent words and phrases. These printable rebus puzzles are a stimulating activity for high-level and advanced English learners, but they are also great to use as office activities, family get-togethers, and by anyone looking to have a bit of mental fun.
They get all people thinking laterally and provide enjoyable mental exercise. Unlike other puzzles, rebuses hide their answers in plain sight. Their seemingly random mix of visuals have hidden meanings and are a test of observation and language skills. A basic example is the combination of the pictures of an eye, a heart, a sun, and a flower to mean – I love sunflowers.
They can be used in an educational environment as a fun warmer, cooler, and a break from a normal learning routine. They also help with learning vocabulary, spelling, pronunciation, problem solving, and pattern recognition.
Some of the puzzles here are themed on topics that may be relevant to what people are studying or doing. There are sets of rebuses about things such as food, animals, US states and cities, seasons, idioms, and more. The easiest puzzles are the ones at the top of the page, and they generally become harder further down. Although there are exceptions, the themed pages are always easier because the topic is given and the target vocabulary is narrowed down.
How to solve rebus puzzles
Being that we are dealing with puzzles, not traditional rebuses that are meant to be easily read, they can get quite tricky. That being said, here are a few pointers on how to go about solving them.
Prepositions are your friend, especially prepositions of place and movement. Think of words such as in, on, around, before, after, up, down, around. Let’s look at some examples of this. If you had a picture of a rainbow with the word somewhere written above it, it can be deciphered as somewhere over the rainbow. The word seat written backwards, TAES, could be solved as back seat. Similarly, a picture of an old man with the word beauty written to the right of it could be read as age before beauty.
Adjectives help a lot and are often shown using pictures. A fire could represent hot. A picture of a rock could stand for the word hard, and an empty wallet could be used to show the word poor. Other examples include the word “shot” written in big letters to mean big shot, or a picture of a horse above a mountain could be used to express the term high horse.
Compound nouns are also often used. If you were to put a picture of a light and house side by side, you would make the word lighthouse. Note that most rebuses are read from left to right, so the light would be on the left to make it read correctly. Another example would be putting an arm next to a chair to make armchair.
Homophones and homographs are extremely common as well. These are words that sound the same but have different meanings, or are spelt the same and have different meanings. The number 2 can be used to show to, two, or too. The letter C could mean sea or see, a picture of the sun could be used for the word son, and a picture of a bank could substitute for a river bank and so on. Words that sound similar are sometimes used, for instance, eyes could appear for ice and 4’s for force. i
Plurals appear in many puzzles for various reasons. If you see the words many many many many – it could mean many times. A sequence of 1s (11111) could be read as once as a phonetic wordplay. Many irregular nouns (and verbs) also change pronunciation when they become plural, which can be used as a fun trick in rebuses. Or, it could be as basic as a picture of multiple dogs to show dogs not dog to show the S in a word or phrase.
Colors can also be used. The word thumb, for example, written in green would mean green thumb. The letter E in red could stand for ready, and a splash of green paint next to the letters NV could be translated as green with envy. Currently, the puzzles on this page are only in black and white however, this makes them easier for most people to print and solve.
These are rather simple examples, be warned, things can get much more complicated, particularly when many of these ideas are combined and stitched together. At least by now you should have an understanding of some of the concepts that can make up rebuses. Now you have a good head start to go ahead and tackle this huge set of rebus puzzles, relax and enjoy a healthy mind workout!
Initially, English learners may find them quite hard, but once they get the hang of them, they find them much easier. In a classroom learning environment, it is best to introduce the concepts behind the rebus puzzles before handing them out. Give examples on the board like – CHmadeINA (made in China), IN_VADERS (space invaders), and (I love you) by drawing an eye, a heart, and the letter U.
You may also need to give clues for some of the harder ones, and you can also make it a group or class exercise and have students work together. Sometimes it works well to draw the 12 blank rectangles on the board, and if a student or team has an answer, they can run up and write it themselves.
A short history of rebus puzzles
The word rebus comes from the Latin expression – “Non verbis, sed rebus”. This means – Not by words but by things. The essence of this is that communication can be done through the use of pictures and objects, not just through language.
Rebuses have been around for a long time and were an archaic form of writing. They actually started as a problem-solving tool for writing itself. Ancient Egyptian writing, or hieroglyphs, was read and written in a rebus-style fashion using pictures for sounds, words, and ideas. Ancient writing in Mesopotamia sometimes also used pictures for the same purpose.
During medieval times, they were used on coats of arms by noblemen and knights to show family names. People often used pictures of objects that sounded similar to their family names. They were also used on other personal objects and buildings to show ownership. This helped illiterate people know to whom things belonged.
The use of rebuses for a fun activity became popular in the Renaissance period. Particularly among social elites in France and Italy, where they began to take on a witty form which then spread further around Europe. By the late 1600s, they had clearly become puzzles, coming into print in pamphlets and books.
Interestingly, not long after, during the Edo period, a rebus-like tradition also came into use. This used visual wordplay that came in the form of woodblock prints and in books. It was a kind of entertainment, hiding words with both phonetic and visual clues to solve them.
In modern times, they began appearing in newspapers and magazines. They started being published in the late 1800s and predate the common newspaper crossword. Later, a variation of rebuses appeared on television in a game show named Catchphrase, which started in 1986. These were, however, animated puzzles, so not pure rebuses in a sense.
You may have also come across puzzles such as wacky wordies and dingbats, these use only words, letters, and numbers, so are not true rebuses as they don’t use images. There are some similar puzzles included here, but they are most definitely in the minority. Nowadays, you can find these optic conundrums all over the internet and in the form of gaming apps. They most certainly have ancient roots that have stood the test of time!
