Soft G words
Here are a couple of soft G words lists that you can use to create your own pronunciation activities. The printable PDF above contains only 100 words while the list below contains over 150 words with the soft G sound.
The soft G is when the letter G is pronounced like a J in words such as ginger, gem, and imagine. The other G sound is the hard G which is somewhat similar to a K sound. Think of words like goal, bag, and grin.
There is a good rule that you can follow to help identify when each sound should be used. The simple rule is that when the letter G is followed by an E, I, or Y, it makes the soft G sound. For example the words age, giant, and gym.
This soft G rule is pretty reliable in most cases. There are however exceptions like most rules for the English language. The word tiger is one such case, the G is followed by an E yet it uses the hard sound.
These instances are quite rare so don’t worry too much about them. One very prominent exception to the rule is the gerund verb form where verbs end in ing. Verbs that normally use the hard sound in their base form continue to do so in this case. Tag and tagging, dig and digging, and log and logging are some examples of this.
