Printable Cave Painting Templates
Here we have some printable prehistoric art that can be used for fun arts and crafts projects. The cave painting templates and outlines feature typical Stone Age drawings of people, animals, and symbols. The pictures include ancient art from various cultures and places around the world.
Sometimes known as pictographs, cave paintings were created using a variety of techniques. Different pigments were collected from the natural world and were applied to cave walls through methods such as blowing them through animal bones and using brushes made from animal hair.
Some of the images here actually come from petroglyphs and not actual paintings. What is the difference, you may ask? Petroglyphs are ancient symbols that were chiselled and carved into rock. They are thought to be important markings for rituals, religion, and sometimes maps. They can be found all over the planet and are often on monuments.
These images are great for stenciling projects. You can give objects a wonderful prehistoric feel by adding these pictures to them. You can do this by either cutting out the interior details or the outlines of the rock art. For younger learners, cutting the outside is always easier and simply requires a pair of scissors.
For a cool Stone Age effect, try gently flicking paint over the stencils or outlines to get a splatter pattern that looks like realistic cave art.
For a fun outdoor activity, you can let children create some temporary art. By using some of the shapes cut out from these pages and colored chalk, kids can decorate sidewalks and concrete areas that the rain will clean up when the time comes. They just need to place a chosen image on the ground and shade around it with classroom chalk. To make these projects more permanent, you can simply take some photographs.
Another alternative, although a messy one, is to use charcoal instead of chalk. Just be prepared for the clean-up afterwards.
Printable Cave Painting Outlines
Next, we have some cave painting outlines that can be used in much the same way as the printables above. These pages also give learners the option to color them in. Once they have been colored in, they can be cut out and stuck to objects as well as cardstock and used to make things such as –
- collages
- murals
- scrapbooking projects
- Stone Age themed clothing
Another fun kids’ project that this printable art can be used for is to make dioramas. With something such as a small shoebox, children can create their own little caves with ancient paintings. Once their caves are done, suggest adding a small fire in the middle, along with some people gathered around it.
